There are certain things that just feel like fall. The first morning you need a sweater. Coffee with the windows open. Worn-in denim. Leaves starting to collect along the side of the road. That first weekend when you realize you could probably get away with wearing boots again.

And somewhere in that list, at least for us, is vintage Ralph Lauren.

Maybe it’s the cable-knit sweaters. Maybe it’s the oversized button-downs, old denim shirts, plaids, quarter-zips, and perfectly broken-in pieces that somehow look even better after twenty or thirty years. Whatever it is, there’s something about vintage Ralph Lauren that feels like it was made for this time of year.

It also fits perfectly into the kind of vintage we love at Elwood. Classic without being boring. Comfortable without looking like you tried too hard. A little preppy, a little outdoorsy, and just rugged enough when you mix it with the right pieces. It feels equally at home walking around town on a Saturday morning or packed into a weekend bag headed somewhere with mountains.

That’s probably why we’re always looking for it when we thrift. We love the old button-downs, especially when they’re a little oversized. Wear one open over a vintage tee, half-tuck it into your favorite denim, or throw a sweater over it when the weather finally gets cold enough. The best ones don’t need much styling. They already have that slightly lived-in look that newer clothes spend a lot of time trying to recreate. Then there are the sweaters.

Give us a vintage cable knit, an old Polo crewneck, or a heavy knit with that tiny embroidered pony, and we’re probably bringing it home. There’s something about a good vintage sweater that makes an outfit feel finished without actually requiring much effort. Jeans, sweater, boots. Done. But what we really love about vintage Ralph Lauren is how easily it mixes with everything else.

Wear the button-down with a Harley tee underneath. Pair the cable knit with beat-up Levi’s instead of something polished. Throw an old denim jacket over the preppiest sweater you own. Add boots that have already seen a few seasons. Suddenly it feels less country club and a little more Colorado road trip, which is exactly where we like it.

That mix is what makes vintage interesting.

We don’t want an outfit to look like it came straight off a mannequin or that every piece was bought at the same time. We want it to feel collected. Something old, something newer, something perfectly worn, and maybe one piece you found buried on a thrift store rack that you absolutely did not need but knew immediately was coming home with you.

Vintage Ralph Lauren does that especially well because so many of the pieces were designed to last beyond one season or trend. A good Oxford shirt still looks good. A cable-knit sweater still works. Denim gets better with age. Plaid comes back around every fall whether anyone declares it a trend or not.

And maybe that’s the bigger reason it feels so right for Elwood. We love clothes that don't need to be reinvented every year. Pieces you can wear differently as your style changes. Clothes that collect stories, soften with age, and somehow become better because somebody wore them before you.

So while everyone else is deciding what’s “in” for fall this year, we’ll probably be somewhere digging through a rack looking for an old Ralph Lauren tag. Preferably attached to an oversized sweater. And preferably with mountains somewhere in our future.
