The Vintage Levi's Fit Guide
One of the questions I get asked most often is, "What is the difference between a 501 and a 505?" or "Why don't these jeans fit like my modern Levi's?"
The truth is that vintage denim is different. Every pair has lived a life before finding its way to Elwood Vintage. They've been worn, washed, stretched, shrunk, and loved for decades. That's part of what makes them special.
When shopping vintage Levi's, I always recommend paying more attention to the measurements than the tag size. A pair tagged 34x32 may actually measure very differently today.
Here are a few of the most common Levi's styles you'll find in the shop:
501
The classic. Button fly, straight leg, and a timeless fit that has been around for generations. If you're looking for the vintage Levi's most people think of, it's probably a 501.
505
Very similar to a 501 but with a zipper fly and a little more room through the seat and thigh. A great everyday vintage jean.
517
The bootcut. Originally designed to fit over boots, these have a slight flare below the knee and are one of my personal favorite vintage fits.
550
A relaxed fit made popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Comfortable, casual, and perfect if you like a little extra room.
One of my favorite things about vintage denim is that no two pairs are exactly alike. The fading, wear patterns, repairs, and character tell a story that modern denim simply can't replicate.
At Elwood Vintage, every pair is measured by hand so you know exactly what you're getting. If you're ever unsure about sizing or fit, don't hesitate to reach out. I'd much rather help you find the right pair than guess.
After more than ten years of hunting for vintage clothing, Levi's are still some of the most exciting pieces to find. Whether it's a perfectly faded 501 or a worn-in pair of 517s, there's just something special about great vintage denim.
Happy hunting,
